Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Transformer Solutions
Engineered to handle severe inverter harmonics, frequent bidirectional charging, and tight skid integration. The robust heartbeat of modern utility-scale energy storage.
BESS Challenges meets GE Solutions
The Challenge: Power Conversion Systems (PCS) converting DC to AC generate significant high-frequency harmonics (5th, 7th, 11th, 13th). This exponentially increases eddy current losses and core/copper losses, causing standard transformers to overheat, suffer rapid insulation degradation, or experience local burnout.
Harmonic Mitigating Transformer Technology: Specialized phase-shifting winding designs that actively cancel specific high-order harmonics within the transformer.
K-Factor / Harmonic Rated Design: Up to K-20 rated designs with oversized conductors to minimize eddy current losses under high THD environments.
Electrostatic Shielding: Grounded copper shields between windings to filter out PCS high-frequency switching noise and common-mode interference.
The Challenge: BESS transformers undergo rapid daily cycles of charging (rectifying mode) and discharging (inverting mode). This frequent bidirectional power flow and steep load curves cause severe temperature fluctuations, subjecting traditional insulation and structure to immense mechanical expansion, contraction fatigue, and loose components.
Bidirectional FEA Optimization: Core and magnetic flux designs optimized for maximum efficiency and thermal distribution in both rectifying and inverting modes.
Reduced Temperature Rise Limit: Lowering design temperature rise (such as oil temperature rise ≤45K and winding rise ≤50K) to radically extend lifespan under peak stress.
High-Temp Insulation: Utilizing Nomex® Class H/R insulation systems to withstand severe thermal shocks.
Reinforced core and clamp fastening: Employs a seismic- and stress-resistant clamping structure to ensure that the clamping force on the active part does not diminish under frequent thermal cycling.
The Challenge: Inverters inevitably inject minor direct current (DC offset) into the transformer’s low-voltage side. This triggers core “DC magnetization”, leading to one-sided magnetic saturation, spiking excitation currents, severe vibrations, and extreme localized heating.
Low Flux Density Core Design: We lower the operational flux density to provide a massive safety margin against DC magnetization, preventing core saturation.
Premium Silicon Steel: High-permeability CRGO steel with step-lap joints drastically reduces no-load losses and suppresses vibration noise.
The Challenge: BESS sites densely pack lithium batteries, PCS, and transformers. Mineral oil rupture poses a severe fire chain-reaction risk. Additionally, EPCs require transformers to be flawlessly integrated onto tight containerized skids alongside switchgears with strict thermal and space limits.
Eco-Friendly FR3 Bio-Fluid: Utilizing >360°C high-flashpoint natural ester fluid (K-class) with self-extinguishing properties to drastically reduce fire hazards in tight spaces.
Silicone Rubber Cast Dry Type Options: 100% oil-free, explosion-proof, and moisture-resistant dry types for indoor or containerized setups.
BESS Skid Integration & Turnkey Capability: Designed with a compact profile and flexible high/low-voltage termination positions (such as side or top entry) to perfectly match various BESS skid platforms and container interfaces. GE Transformer has sufficient integration capabilities, providing a one-stop solution including the transformer, Ring Main Unit (RMU), BESS low-voltage distribution cabinet, and containerized skid base.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of reducing the temperature rise to 45K/50K for BESS?
BESS transformers face severe, sudden load spikes. By designing for an ultra-low base temperature rise (Oil ≤45K, Winding ≤50K), the transformer has massive thermal headroom. This prevents insulation degradation during peak bidirectional stress, effectively doubling the lifespan compared to a standard 60K/65K unit.
Q: Do you provide full skid-mounted integration with RMU and LV Cabinets?
Yes. GE Transformer has strong integration capabilities to provide a complete one-stop solution incorporating the transformer, Ring Main Unit (RMU), BESS low-voltage distribution cabinet, and the containerized skid base ready for plug-and-play setup.
Q: Why is a Harmonic Mitigating Transformer crucial for inverters?
Standard transformers overheat under the high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) generated by PCS. Our specialized Harmonic Mitigating Transformer utilizes phase-shifting to trap and cancel 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics before they reach the primary side, maintaining cool operation.
